Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as PvE damage and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a boost in stats or an extra effect. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a special kind of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may have a prefix or suffix that alters the name of the equipment to the upgrade (for examplefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to make stronger versions of the equipment using the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by collecting them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher tier version of an item will be revealed in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue improving their equipment even if they're not sure of how much they'll increase after a future reset.

The process of upgrading an item could be expensive and it is likely that the item will be obsolete, or even break, in the event that the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed if the upgrade fails. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items that can double or even eliminate the chance of failure, and some upgrades that offer an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements which can be put in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of all nodes within the area around them as well as existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We suggest upgrading them as soon as possible up to 15 levels.

It is commonplace to see in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best way to upgrade your equipment. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded directly to level 15, and they provide an enormous boost to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to reach higher nodes more quickly.

Glyphs, the only upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and then replaced with no restrictions are the most popular. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and rebuilt using a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Each Glyph has a particular range of values that can enhance a stat by. The value is shown when you select the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph of the same rank or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the Glyph.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be bought from NPCs, or on the upgrade tab in crafting tables. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields several Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item, and once enough points have been earned, the upgrade can be claimed and any additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item upgrader of the same kind. The same armor will be upgraded to the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set bonus. This could be a problem because it can cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't need it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do so. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will have a level 1 base and a completely different set of bonus bonuses. Additionally, the item will lose any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, and all additional effects associated with the effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or reload speed). The player will be able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from the lowest to the highest. This means that if a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit it will be applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the item definition and the value is recomputed each time an upgrade is made.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined by its rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots.
